Mrs. Florence Egerter heard a statement in 1957 announcing grants from the Canada Council. Provision was to be made for 4 universities, one at Lakehead, one at Windsor and 2 at other locations. She prepared a resolution that she presented to the Allanburg Women’s Institute for the establishment of a university in the Niagara area. In the autumn of 1962, the Brock Founders’ Committee was established. In 1963, Arthur Schmon who was the chair of the Founders’ Committee offered the position of University President to James A. Gibson. Subsequent presidents were: Alan Earp, Terry White, David Atkinson and Jack Lightstone. Classes began in September of 1964 with 127 students. They were held at the St. Paul United Church in St. Catharines. The University had been scheduled to open in a renovated refrigeration plant but an electricians’ strike delayed the renovation of the building. The Glenridge Campus was officially opened in October of 1964. On September 19, 1966, the Brock Tower was ready for occupancy. Richard L. Hearn was appointed as the Inaugural Chancellor in 1967. The university was named after Major-General Sir Isaac Brock. Brock who lost his life in the Battle of Queenston Heights in 1812. He uttered Surgite! (Latin for “push on”) as he died. This is used as the university’s motto.en_US
