      Two ledgers of the Welland County Industrial Home (also known as the Welland County Home or the poorhouse). The first ledger is a record of inmates, 1921-1934, and includes names of inmates, ethnic origin, marital status, birthplace, date of birth, occupation, parent’s names and birthplaces, religion, and the names and addresses of relatives. The other ledger is a burial register, September 1888-July 1947, and includes the names of deceased inmates, the date of death, age, cause of death, place of interment, and grave number.

      The records include material on the Welland County Fair, the Welland Festival of Arts, the Welland Optimist Club, the Welland County Hospital Campaign, the last session of the Council of the County of Welland and the unveiling of a historic plaque at Welland Mills. The bulk of the collection is correspondence and media releases. This archive is part of the larger Ontario Editorial Bureau fonds (OEB) housed at Brock University.

      The fonds consists of one ledger book belonging to William Claus, deputy superintendent general for Upper Canada in the Indian Department. The ledger book details financial arrangements conducted between the government and the Haudenosaunee of the Six Nations of the Grand River. Also included is the scrapbook of Catherine Anne Margaret Claus Evans, a granddaughter of William Claus and his wife Catherine Jordan, 1870; an unidentified scrapbook from the early 20th century, three small religious books, 14 postcards of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., including Niagara Camp, Masonic and Eastern Star commemoratives, and World War II ration books and tokens.

    • William Hamilton Merritt Welland Canal circular, July 12, 1823

      This circular, dated at St. Catharines, July 12, 1823, and addressed to Alexander Hamilton, Esq., from W. Hamilton Merritt, is one of the earliest printed references to the construction of the Welland Canal. That same year, Merritt had organized local meetings to gain support for his plan to build a canal connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The circular reads “the accompanying Report and Address to the Public, together with the Proceedings of the Meeting, will point out to you the object of this Circular…”. The report and address are not enclosed. Merritt asks for Hamilton’s assistance in “promoting so necessary an undertaking…I have taken the liberty of appointing you an Agent for Queenston without your previous concurrence. If you decline acting, have the goodness to hand it to some respectable person of your acquaintance who will exert himself…”
