Reimagining Learning Disabilities: Embracing Difference as an Empowering Resource Amidst Psycho-Emotional Disablism

This dissertation explores the experiences of psycho-emotional disablism in individuals with learning disabilities (LDs) and examines how, despite these challenges, they can reframe their LD as a resource. Employing a Critical Disability Studies (CDS) and a social-relational framework, three interconnected studies were conducted. The first study analyzed the public narratives of three prominent LD advocates—Richard Branson, Henry Winkler, and Barbara Corcoran—highlighting how they view their LDs as unique strengths. The second study focused on disability memoirs, revealing both the disabling and empowering experiences of individuals with LDs, highlighting their distinctive strengths. The third study involved qualitative analyses through individual interviews and journal entries with post-secondary LD students, providing a comprehensive understanding of both the challenges and empowering aspects of their lived experiences. These discussions underscore one of the greatest strengths of this dissertation: its ability to integrate positive psychology with disability studies to explore how individuals with LDs, within the broader context of social structures, can navigate psycho-emotional disablism and reconceptualize disability as a resource. The research emphasizes the importance of understanding disability within broader socio-cultural contexts and recognizing the potential for growth, innovation, and success inherent in neurodiversity. It calls for a paradigm shift in education and support systems to promote inclusivity and equity. By highlighting the voices and experiences of individuals with LDs, this dissertation contributes to the broader discourse on disability, empowerment, and self-advocacy, advocating for a more nuanced and strengths-based understanding of LDs. An inquiry into the barriers to participation within the fitness industry for people living with mobility challengesWilson, Kirk; Department of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in Education (Brock University, 1999-07-09)This qualitative study was designed to inquire about the barriers to participation within the fitness industry for people living with mobility challenges. i\n examination of the insights, stolies~ and experiences with barriers through interviews gi ven by 4 people living with mobility challenges (PMC) formed the core of the research. An analysis of the interviews from the 4 PMC informants was performed at t\\/O levels. First, a content analysis served to identify general and specific categories related to barrier issues within various fitness environments. Secondly, in-depth thematic analyses of the entries related to the insights and stories from the 4 informants which emerged from the content analysis of the data gave rise to fi ve thematic statements. From the thematic statements a fitness industry awareness protocol was created in the fonn of a statement response questionnaire. The protocol, which was given to 4 fitness assessors/trainers, \vas used to provide a snapshot of the fitness industry's readiness to work vvith disability. Throughout the process, the four PNIC informants formed a collaborati vely involved group of coresearchers, adding their voices to the narrative of the fitness-barrier experience. The result of the study suggests that barriers to participation within the fitness industry for PMC exist in various forms and levels of severity. The results also suggest that the fitness industry needs to better prepare their people and environment for working with people with physical disabilities, such as PMC, and provide a more open and positi ve environment for participation. Within the context of any fitness-related environment, recognizing that barriers to participation do exist, and acknowledging and accepting people with disabilities for who they are as indi viduals, will serve to develop a relationship where fitness practitioners and people with disabilities can work towards creating an inviting, inclusive, accessible, and barrier-free fitness environment for all.

Youth with intellectual disabilities and the right to make choices : investigating the family context to inform a training programSaaltink, Robyn; Department ofChild and Youth Studies (Brock University, 2011-03-08)People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are more likely to be victims of abuse and human rights violations than people without ID. The 3Rs: Rights, Respect, and Responsibility project has developed and is testing a human rights training program for adults with ID. The current project was conducted to make recommendations to adapt the 3Rs rights training program to be used with youth with ID and their families. An interpretive phenomenological framework was employed to investigate youth with ID, parents', and siblings' perceptions of the i r experiences with choice making, an enactment of rights, in the family context. Thematic analysis of interviews revealed that, consistent with previous research, family members consider family values, conventions, and family members' well being when making decisions. A training program should promote a consideration of expanded opportunities for youth with ID to make choices and should be flexible to address individual families' cultures, needs, and desires.

Deinstitutionalization and community inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities in Ontario : a case analysisEbrahimi, Mana; Center for Applied Disability Studies (Brock University, 2011-03-08)In the last few decades, there have been significant changes in the way people with intellectual disabilities (ID) live in many countries around the world. Large isolated institutions have been replaced by community-based housing. This study examined the deinstitutionalization process in Ontario and it's effects on the lives of three individuals with ID. A case analysis approach was used allowing for in depth evaluation of the quality of life of these participants following their discharge with a focus on family involvement, community engagement, and choice making. A discrepancy analysis between the Essential Elements Plan (EEP), constructed when they were entering the community placement, and the current living arrangements was also done. The results of this study suggested that with community living comes improvements in family interactions, community engagement, and decision-making. However, these improvements were found to be minimal. Also, little discrepancy was found between the EEPs and their actual placements.
