Thomas McIntyre, a native of Scotland, was a furniture maker in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1834. He expanded his offering to coffins (perhaps initially supplied by his brother-in-law John Ker – see note below) and together with his son John B. McIntyre operated a successful funeral business. The McIntyre business was located at 266 St. Paul Street until 1933. Thomas McIntyre organized the St. Andrew’s Society of St. Catharines in 1835 and served as its first president. J.B. McIntyre died in 1927 and sold the funeral home business to N.S. Crowe and later Percy Hulse. Thomas McIntyre married Helen Ker, daughter of Thomas Ker and Elizabeth Ball, in 1837. Helen Ker’s maternal grandfather was Jacob Ball. Thomas and Helen McIntyre had eighteen children, nine sons and nine daughters. Thomas McIntyre died in 1889 at the age of 79. John Ker (d. 1888, age 82) was the son of Thomas Ker and Elizabeth Ball. He was the brother to Helen Ker McIntyre. He was a contractor on the Welland Canal enlargement and later made his home in Stamford Township. He was a justice of the peace in 1837, and was an active magistrate for over forty years. John Ker kept a coffin register that included the name of the deceased, the location and cause of death, the size of the coffin and other details related to the funeral.
