The Women’s Art Association of Hamilton was founded in 1894 to preserve Hamilton’s culture during a period of rapid growth and industrialization. The group met in private homes and in the stock room of city merchants until a temporary art gallery was established in an old public health building in 1914. The Association worked to create a general interest in art, provided art scholarships, and held lectures, seminars, and exhibitions. An annual exhibition has been held every year since 1896, with an annual juried show at the Art Gallery of Hamilton since 1947. In addition, several pieces of artwork have been donated to the permanent collection of the Gallery by the Association. The Women’s Art Association of Hamilton continues to promote an appreciation of the visual arts among its members and within the community.en_US
