Letter from Sir John A. Macdonald to Lachlan McCallum, 12 July 1889
Abstract
A letter from Sir John A. Macdonald to Senator McCallum 12 July 1889 reads: "I have yours of the 8th inst. Woods instructions will be simply to investigate and report on the charges brought against Mr. Ellis by you.I don't think the Governor General can be asked or would consent to the suspension of Mr. Ellis before his trial. That would be contrary to the spirit of British justice.
I have instructed them at Ottawa to see that Mr. Wood has power to examine witnesses under oath."
