dc.description | Esther Summers was born in Earlton, Ontario on June 3, 1913. In the early 1930s she was a full-time teacher in Thorold, and from 1950 to 1969, she worked as a supply teacher. She served as the official historian of the city of Thorold since 1983. One of her main interests was Laura Secord and she contributed a vast amount of knowledge and research to the study of Secord. She was involved in the writing of over 30 books about Secord and also about the War of 1812. Mrs. Summers was active in with the Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario, DeCew Falls Women’s Institute, the Beaverdams Church, the Mayholme Foundation and the Ontario Genealogical Society. She was involved in reorganizing the Thorold and Beaverdams Society, the Pelham Historical Society and the St. Catharines Museum. Mrs. Summers was awarded a Bicentennial Medal in 1984; a Canada 125 Medal in 1992; a Senior Citizen of the Year award from the Thorold Chamber of Commerce in 1995; the Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 1998; the Ontario Heritage Foundation Award in 2001 and the Heritage Niagara award for the preservation of the history of Niagara. The Esther Summers Award of Excellence was created in 2006 by Heritage Niagara. This award is presented to students in both Niagara school boards who demonstrate a good knowledge of local history. On her 90th birthday in 2003, Esther donated this bundle of newspapers to the Mackenzie Printery and Newspaper Museum. It was decided that the newspapers would be stored in the Special Collections and Archives at Brock University. Some of the samples would be on display at the Queenston Museum. | en_US |
