dc.description.abstractHistoric map showing military reserves in Niagara. North is oriented to the bottom right toward Lake Ontario. Fort George and Fort Mississaga (sic) are shown on the Canadian side of the river and Fort Niagara is shown on the American side. Butlers Barracks is shown with its buildings numbered. Also shown is an Indian Council House and a hospital. A line running east to west to the south of the town (present day Niagara-on-the-Lake) indicates a military boundary line. Unnamed streets, buildings and plots of land. Includes various proposed changes to Fort Mississauga. Letters and numbers have been added which are not on the original 1817 map by H.H. Willson. Relief is shown by hachures. Forested areas are also indicated.
dc.description.abstractThe map includes various handwritten notations. The following information details the meaning of numbers which are shown labelling specific buildings on the map: “Memo / The numbers from 1 to 29 has reference to the detached plans, sections and elevations of public buildings – Aug. 21-1823.” A second memo reads: “Project for Mississaga by Colonel Nicolls Royal Engineers black lines – N by Colonel Dunford Com. Royal Engineer dotted black lines (?) Red lines.” "(signed) Henry Vavasour, Capn. Comg. Royal Engr., Niagara Frontier. Royal Engineers Office Quebec Novr 19 - 1818." The map bears the stamp of the Inspector General of Fortifications. Ink stamp on verso: National Map Collection, Public Archives of Canada.
